The Making of Moon In the Bucket (the film)
Deer Lodge and Bozeman, Montana
First came the original performance of "Moon In the Bucket," a collaboration with Garrett Fisher. He was inspired by the Noh play "Matsutake" (The Pining Wind), in which two ghost sisters inhabit the wind in a pine tree. Seven musicians, two dancers (Alethea Adsitt and Sandra Fann) and one soprano later, we had a run at Nippon Kan Theatre in Seattle's old Japantown, or Nihonmachi. It seemed fitting, since the venue has stories of ghosts inhabiting the space.
After the run, Garrett made a studio recording of the music. I refer to that as "Moon In the Bucket II" (click here for the CD )
Then Garrett found filmmaker Theo Lipfert of Singing Pictures in Bozeman, Montana. Theo proposed taking nine minutes of the recorded score and doing a short film shot on location at the prison in Deer Lodge (It's now a museum. Parents streamed through with their kids to scare them straight. I'm not a parent, but I'm sure it's worth six bucks a pop). I flew out to see the location and do some stand-in work with Carah, which Theo captured digitally. This was my first foray into the film world, and for those who know my work and how subtle (slow? glacial?) it is should know that film is the perfect medium for it. Provided the director and cinematographer have an eye and a vision, which Theo does. Stay tuned for film release details.
Yoko Murao, Garrett and I flew out for the shoot and stayed in the motel with shag carpet, across the street from the prison. Next door, we could treat ourselvs to a "warden burger" and fries at the drive-in. It was cold in that prison, and Yoko kept her hands warm with a heating pad between takes. I kept praying for a good solid hot flash.
We all hoped that the road to the second location -- a reservoir -- would be open and with little snow. It was, but the water was still icy cold. When Theo and Carah talked about "bear spray," I thought they were joking and trying to put one over on the city girl. They were serious, and every time I heard a twig snap, I reached for the can of spray.
We didn't need our last day for shooting, so we got into the car and headed for the mineral springs. They're everywhere, really cheap, and Theo knows the good ones. We found some really bad coffee on the way back, then headed home the next day.
